Where you carry weight matters as much as how much you carry. Your waist-to-hip ratio is a simple check for fat stored around the middle.
How this works
Waist-to-hip ratio = waist circumference ÷ hip circumference, measured in the same units.
The World Health Organization links a ratio of 0.90 or more in men and 0.85 or more in women with a substantially increased risk of metabolic complications such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Measure the waist midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, and the hips at the widest point.
