Your basal metabolic rate is the energy your body burns just to keep you alive at rest. It’s the starting point for working out how much to eat.
How this works
Basal metabolic rate uses the Mifflin–St Jeor equation (weight in kg, height in cm, age in years):
- Men: 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age + 5
- Women: 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age − 161
If you enter your body fat percentage, the Katch–McArdle equation is shown as well: 370 + 21.6 × lean body mass (kg).
Results are estimates for general information only and are not medical advice. Talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian before making major changes to your diet or exercise, especially if you are pregnant or have a health condition.
