“Love handles” is a area of waist that others can grab on to you as if it’s a handle. It’s pockets of fat stored around abdominal region and are generally genetically consistent meaning you might be heavy in mid-section if your mom/dad is heavy in mid-section.

Typically, love handles are at the side of your body, just above the hip. However, it describes more than just this area. Exercises to improve this area will improve your entire waistline including stomach muscles, back muscles and sides.

Many will work on their love handles for the look, but, you should do this for the health reason as well.  Researchers said you will suffer higher heart risk (diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease) when you are over weight around your middle area. If you have large mid-section, you might develop insulin resistance.

Insulin send chemical signal to the brain to burn sugar in the blood for fuel. The body does not burn sugars properly if you develop insulin resistance. These excess sugars become stored fat and ultimately cause Diabetes.  According to “National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2014“, issued by CDC, 9.3% of the U.S. population have diabetes. One in Four (25.9%) have Diabetes if you are 65 years or older.

So, even if you don’t care about how you look, you should get rid of those love handles for the Health Reason.

The Muscle Make Up
As a first step, it’s necessary to understand the body of the real muscles called the Stomach muscles.

External Oblique:
This is the outer muscle that covers the sides of the abdomen. From here, it moves down and forward. It runs moving downward from your sides to the center of your stomach area.

Internal Oblique:
This muscle is a triangle shaped muscle. It is smaller along with a good deal thinner than the external oblique. The external oblique muscle overlays this muscle. This muscle runs diagonally in an upward movement from each of your sides up towards the center of your abdominal region.

>Transverses Abdominis:
The fibers of the muscle run horizontally. This muscle is the inmost of layers of muscle.

Rectus Abdominis Muscles:
These are long and flat muscles. They are crossed by three tendinous intersections. These intersections are called linae transversae. The muscle is really within a thick sheath of muscle fibers that originate from the 3 muscles located in the lateral stomach wall. It is on your transverses abdominis. It runs the center of your abdomen from top to bottom.

Pyramidalis Muscle:
This is a little and triangle shaped muscle in the abdominal area. It is in fact situated at the lower abdominal area placed in front of the rectus abdominis muscle. It starts at your pubic bone and is inserted into the linea alba and runs about half way as much as the tummy button area.
