Walking on an incline burns far more calories than walking on the flat. See exactly how much speed and incline change your burn.
How this works
This uses the American College of Sports Medicine metabolic equations, with speed in meters per minute and grade as a decimal:
- Walking: VO2 = 0.1 × speed + 1.8 × speed × grade + 3.5
- Running: VO2 = 0.2 × speed + 0.9 × speed × grade + 3.5
Calories per minute = VO2 × body weight (kg) ÷ 1000 × 5. Walking applies up to 3.7 mph (6 km/h), running above that.
Stop exercising and rest if you feel pain, dizziness or unusual shortness of breath. Check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program.
