Sit and Reach Test

Tight hamstrings and a stiff lower back are common causes of back pain. Test your flexibility in a minute with this classic sit and reach test.

How this works

Sit with your legs straight and the soles of your feet flat against a box or wall. Reach forward slowly with both hands, one on top of the other, and hold for two seconds. Record how far past your toes (positive) or short of them (negative) your fingertips reach. Take the best of three tries after a warm-up.

Ratings are a general guide based on toe level; formal tests use a measuring box with age and sex norms.

Results are estimates for general information only and are not medical advice. Talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian before making major changes to your diet or exercise, especially if you are pregnant or have a health condition.
